Explore the South Coast Winter Photography tour day-by-day

  1. Day 1 Arrival day

Arrival at Keflavík International Airport. We arrange the transfer to your hotel. We meet up, have an introduction dinner together and discuss the upcoming trip.

  2. Day 2 Reykjavík - Kirkjubæjarklaustur

On the first day of the Winter Photography Tour we travel along the Ring Road towards Kirkjubæjarklaustur. We stop at numerous locations that best suit the weather conditions on that day, leaving the ones we skip to be visited on day 4 and/or 6 of the itinerary. We make a halt at the most scenic locations and some lesser known locations like Urriðafoss, Gljúfrabúi and Kvernufoss. We try to get the most out of the day before we travel to our overnight stay for three nights in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area. Depending on the weather conditions and solar activity during the night we try to photograph the Northern Lights.

  3. Day 3 Ice Cave & Ice Lagoon

Today is all about glaciers and their blue-coloured ice. We meet up with an experienced ice caving guide who takes us to one or a few ice caves underneath Vatnajökull glacier. These crystal blue caves are sometimes difficult to reach but once you get there, they are a big reward by themselves. The surreal colours and sheer beauty make them an absolute must visit as a photographer. After exploring the caves, we attempt to catch the last moments of a daylight at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and the nearby black beach that is usually filled with crystal clear or blue ice blocks. Depending on the weather conditions and solar activity during the night we try to photograph the Northern Lights. Overnight stay in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

  4. Day 4 Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón & Stokksnes

It is the final day in the Vatnajökull area. We start by visiting a nearby canyon called Fjaðrárgljúfur. The rest of the day takes us further east, making stops at Skaftafell, Svinasfelljökull and finally Stokksnes. The last one is known for its beautiful black sand dunes and the nearby mountain Vestrahorn. Both of them together make for a truly surreal landscape. On the way back, depending on the time that is left, we can make an additional stop at the black beach near Jökulsárlón. Depending on the weather conditions and solar activity during the night we try to photograph the Northern Lights. Overnight stay in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

  5. Day 5 Kirkjubæjarklaustur - Þorsmörk

On this day we start heading back towards the west (making stops at the locations we possibly skipped on the first day). Near Seljalandsfoss, we will take a right turn towards Þórsmörk. This hidden gem is located behind the infamous Eyfjallajökull volcano that erupted in 2010. Its remotely located stunning landscapes and unspoiled nature offers a lot of photo opportunities and, who knows, we might even be able to photograph some of the curious arctic foxes. Depending on the weather conditions and solar activity during the night we try to photograph the Northern Lights. Overnight stay at the Volcano Huts in Þórsmörk.

  6. Day 6 Þorsmörk

Today we explore Þórsmörk area further. When everything is covered in snow, we can use snowshoes. Þórsmörk has one of Iceland’s most dynamic and beautiful landscapes, where active volcanoes and towering glaciers rise above the lush valleys below. There are a lot of great photo opportunities to be found here, especially in the soft winter light. Returning to the Volcano Huts, you find a little cozy sauna alongside with a geothermal pool waiting for you to relax, maybe grab a cup of coffee and browse the photos you made during the past days. Depending on the weather conditions and solar activity during the night we try to photograph the Northern Lights. Overnight stay at the Volcano Huts in Þórsmörk.

  7. Day 7 Þorsmörk - Reykjavík

On this final day we travel to the lesser frequented locations along the Golden Circle. We make several stops at Hjálparfoss, Faxafoss and Brúarfoss. We can also make an additional stops at the well known attractions like Gullfoss and Geysir upon request. We finish the trip all together at the farewell dinner. It is an excellent way to share experiences and celebrate successful photo shootings. Overnight stay in Reykjavík.
