Explore the Golden Circle, South Coast & Southern Highlands tour day-by-day

  1. Day 1 Þingvellir - Geysir - Gullfoss

You pick up your car in Reykjavík and drive a short distance to Þingvellir National Park. It is a UNESCO site and a place of Icelandic Parliament foundation in AD 930. Þingvellir is also located in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge caused by the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plates separation. You have a chance to walk along the part of it, called Almannagja gorge. Next you drive to Geysir, the famous hot spring that has given name to hot springs all over the world. Geysir had been remaining inactive for years now, but its neighbour Strokkur gushes regularly up to the air. In only 10-min driving distance there is Gullfoss, or “The Golden Fall”, spectacular double cascade waterfall. Overnight stay in the area.

    Driving distance is +-205km.

  2. Day 2 Landmannalaugar

Today you head up deeper into Iceland's interior. You drive through the rough lava fields and multiple mountains, fording several rivers on the way. When the landscape becomes unbelievably colorful with bubbling hot springs, it means that you reached Landmannalaugar wonderland. The fuss at the base is caused by numerous hikers starting here the famous Laugavegurinn trail. You can find peace in the hills above though. There is also a popular hot pot where you can take a bath. You continue driving to the South-East, which is rather a challenging route on the gravel road with several rivers to ford. However, it is also a lot of fun, especially with such an unearthly scenery around. It is ideal to take this road slowly and enjoy the highlands in their full glory before entering the coast. Overnight stay in Kirkjubæjaklaustur area.

    Driving distance is +-211km.

  3. Day 3 Vík - Skógar - Seljalandsfoss

The South Coast and its various popular attractions are the goal of today. First ones are right around the corner from Vík. Reynisfjara impresses with its black sandy beach backed by Reynisdrangar, basalt sea stacks emerging from the sea. Then, you continue driving up the hill to Dyrhólahey. It dramatically rises above the Vík neighborhood, revealing the beautiful overlook of the coast. Puffins are keen on nesting in its bluff cliffs in summer time. Then you carry on driving along the Ring Road. The impressive Skógafoss appear first to the right-hand side. You can take steep stairs up the mountain for a better view from above. Seljalandsfoss is the next spectacular waterfall on your way. It tumbles over rocky scarp into a pool, leaving some room between the water and the wall, for the stirring walks behind the waterfall. Overnight stay in Hvolsvöllur area.

    Driving distance is +-149km.

  4. Day 4 Þórsmörk

Your another mountain track challenge is on the way to Þórsmörk. This gravel road takes you to another dimension. Þórsmörk serves you completely different landscape than what you have seen before. It is a green paradise where active volcanoes and towering glaciers rise above the lush valleys below. You have a chance to see here an infamous Eyjafjallajökull that paralyzed air traffic in 2010. There is also plenty of hiking possibilities. Overnight stay in Þórsmörk.

    Driving distance is +-53km.

  5. Day 5 Reykjavík

It is about the time to slowly return to reality. However, before that, allow yourself for the last cherry on the cake. Stakkholtsgjá gorge is located right beneath Eyjafjallajökull volcano on the way out of Þórsmörk. Stretch your legs in an easy hike along the river bed admiring the lush greenery around. After that, you continue driving the F-road through the glacier rivers and rocky surfaces up to the Road 1. You arrive in Reykjavík early evening.

    Driving distance is +-151km.
