Guided tour

Stakkholtsgjá is a narrow, 2 km long and up to 100 meters deep canyon in Þórsmörk Nature Reserve. The hike starts at the mouth of the canyon which becomes deeper and narrower. At the end of the canyon, after crossing a river by foot, there is a hidden waterfall. A visit to Stakkholtsgjá canyon is a great way to get to know the area of Þórsmörk and experience the beauty of Icelandic nature. Þórsmörk is an area surrounded by three glaciers, one of which is the well known Eyjafjallajökull glacier that erupted in 2010.

The tour starts in Reykjavík and continues with the scenic drive along the South Coast. You visit the picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and turn to the 4x4 road that crosses multiple glacier rivers and enter the volcanic landscape of Þórsmörk. You arrive in Húsadalur where it is possible to have lunch and drinks, and explore the area a little bit before the bus continues to the canyon of Stakkholtsgjá. The experienced guide guides you through the canyon and makes sure that you are safe. After the hike you return to Húsadalur, and you can either stay over the night in the rustic mountain huts or return to Reykjavík.
